Greene County High School will once again be a host site for this Saturday’s Iowa High School Music Association State Solo and Small Ensemble contest.

Choir Director David Heupel has five ensembles and 15 soloists performing. The jazz choir, Jazzatonics, are in one group called the “madrigal choir.” Heupel points out that the “madrigal choir” will sing music that is 500-years old. Otherwise, all of the vocal students are performing in one of four chamber choirs. Some of the band students will also perform in ensembles and as soloists.

Heupel says the high school is hosting the annual event for the 17th year. He’s proud to keep that tradition going and adds that there’s several volunteers that help make it a success. The custodial and high school office staff help throughout the day. Instructor Donna Carhill provides a lunch for judges, directors, accompanists and bus drivers in the Ram Restaurant.

There are seven centers that all start at 8am and run until about 5:30pm. The schools that will be attending include: Perry, Denison, Webster City, Gilbert, Boone and Adel-DeSoto-Minburn. The Greene County choir students perform their ensembles at approximately 3pm, 3:20, 3:40, and 4, and the madrigal choir performs around 11:52am. The public is invited to watch the performances, with a suggested donation of $3 for adults and $1 for students.
