Practical Farmers of Iowa are hosting a special program on cover crop grazing Tuesday near Jefferson.

Farmer Bill Frederick will host the field day event at his farm from noon to 3pm. He will discuss cover crop grazing mixes and rates, fall and spring grazing management and spring termination. Attendees will get to watch cow-calf pairs grazing cereal rye, while having access to both the barn low and cover crop pastures. Additionally, Grand Junction farmer James Holz, who co-founded Iowa Cover Crop with Frederick, will talk about feeding ryelage to feedlot cows. Adair farmer Dustin Farnsworth will speak about how grazing cover crops can help farmers make money during the transition to organic.

Bill and his parents operate a diversified crop and livestock farm on 800-acres, which includes: corn, soybeans, wheat, oats, triticale grown for cover crop seed, cereal rye, turnips, sorghum sudan grass, millet, kale and radishes. He also has 100-head of cows.

The event is part of the Practical Farmers’ 2018 spring cover crop “caravan” field day series.
