Greene County improved t0 2-0 in high school boys’ soccer with a 10-0 rout of Carroll High on Thursday in Grand Junction. The Rams led 7-0 at halftime and won by the 10-goal, or Mercy rule with just under six minutes left in the second half.
Brazilian foreign exchange student Leo Marques scored five goals and now has seven goals in the first two games. Austin Delp and Junior Gutierrez each scored twice with one by Isaiah Losee.
Head coach Carl Behne talked about the victory with Raccoon Valley Radio. “We were a little sluggish at the start, but then four or five minutes in, we started getting things going. I’d like us to be a little more crisp at the start, and we have some work to do on our throw-ins, but other than that, the kids did a great job and we looked really good!”
Marques also had an assist for an 11 point game. The Rams were 10 of 14 in shots on goal. Goal keeper Kyle Peters went six for six in save opportunities.
The Greene County girls dropped a 10-0 decision at Class 1A eighth ranked Gilbert on the road. Coach Marilyn Tasler’s team trailed by just a 2-0 score with eight minutes to play in the first half. The coach told Raccoon Valley Radio the game ended by the Mercy rule with about two minutes remaining in the match. “Gilbert is a very good team. We weren’t able to get much going on offense and much of the game was played on our defensive end of the field.”
