The ACGC track and field teams showed they will be a spotlight team come May, with their most impressive results of the season at last night’s Wildcat Relays in Stuart.
Leading the charge were the girls, highlighted by Kate Crawford posting the twelfth fastest time in the state in the 3000 meter run. She posted a mark of 10:36.51, shaving nine seconds off her previous season best and easily placing herself in the qualifying field for next week’s Drake Relays. Crawford was heartbroken that she just missed the cut last year and it was her main goal this year to run on the blue oval.
Senior Emma Swanson strolled in right behind Crawford to grab what’s becoming a routine 18 points for the Chargers. Other top finishers for the girls include: Audrey Stowe in the 800, Crawford in the 1500, Mady McDermott in the discus, Sara Schmeling in the long jump, and three relays. The team posted a season best 169 points to claim their first team title this year, 51 points ahead of second place Van Meter.
Van Meter and ACGC were also in the top two on the boys side, however the Chargers fell five points short of besting the bulldogs. Junior Clay Billheimer and senior Caden Wardyn highlighted the boys efforts. Billheimer nearly broke the 1600 meter record set by classmate Noah Nelsen on Tuesday, winning the event with a time of 4:41.50. He also won the 800 and 400 meter disciplines.
Wardyn came right behind Billheimer in the 400 and easily won another long jump title, recording the four longest jumps of the day by himself. Dylan Soper (100) and Noah Nelsen (3200) also were victorious.
