Most of us have heard the saying “a tradition unlike any other” and that is still true for Greene County fourth graders as they participated in Ag on the Farm Tuesday.

The event is sponsored by Greene County Farm Bureau and it allows Greene County fourth graders to get hands-on experience with several agricultural topics. The over 20-year-old program was previously hosted by Tim and Vickie Robbins. Last year was their final year to commemorate the memory of their grandson Grant Robbins, who tragically died in an ATV accident in 2015. This year’s hosts were Connor and Lindsay Juergensen of Churdan. Connor told Raccoon Valley Radio why they wanted to continue the event.

“It was a no-brainer because we 15 years ago were on Tim and Vickie’s farm. We had fun and learned a lot. It kind of sparked and progressed our interest in what we do now. We like talking to anybody we can and advocating for agriculture and what we do out here. We’re trying to do the best we can in the best ways. (So) Bring some kids out here and show them how we do it.”

The kids experienced ten different stations including: solar power and electricity, drones, conservation practices, corn, farm safety, sheep, cow/calf, hogs, ethanol, and agriculture minute-to-win-it games. Entities that helped out included: Boone County Farm Bureau, Farm Credit Services, Iowa Select Farms, Channel Seed with Chance Paup, Iowa Corn Growers Association and Louis Dreyfus.
