Greene County High School had its two soccer teams at different locations on Tuesday night, but the results were the same; losses by shut out.
The Class 1A number 15 boys lost at number four Gilbert by a 1-0 final. Coach Carl Behne’s Rams fell to 6-3 overall and 0-1 vs. Heart of Iowa Activities Conference competition. The coach said the loss hurt, but he saw several positives on a windy night. “What a match tonight, and a real litmus test four our program. The winds, sustained at 20 MPH and gusty all night, played a huge role in the match. Both teams had one half to use the wind when it was in their favor and Gilbert capitalized, while we just couldn’t make it happen on our chances.” The coach added goal keeper Kyle Peters had a great game, but especially in the first half when the Rams battled the wind. “Overall, he had 17 saves and the only goal was a header that snuck in while the box was very crowded on a corner kick.” The Rams had eight shots on goal, but came up empty. Gilbert is 6-1 and five of their victories have been by one goal.
The girls fell in Grand Junction to Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) 2-0. Coach Marilyn Tasler’s team is 1-4 on the season. The coach told Raccoon Valley Radio her team is playing much better. “The girls are a lot more aggressive and they even had seven shots tonight, which is seven more than a week ago.” The Knights scored twice in the first 25 minutes. “We held Kuemper without a goal the last 55 minutes of the game. It’s slowly coming together as the girls are getting more confident and starting to get more comfortable with each other.” Kuemper improved to 4-1 with the victory.
