Day one of the 2018 Drake Relays for Raccoon Valley Radio area athletes was highlighted by a championship from Greene County High School high jumper Megan Durbin. The senior won the event with a leap of 5′ 7″, one inch better than freshman Kiersten Fisher of Southeast Valley (Gowrie). Durbin has jumped at Drake Stadium six times in her career and never finished worse than second place. She was first at the Drake Relays and first in the Class 3A State meet in 2016, second at State in 2015, and second at State and second at the Drake Relays in 2017. Durbin and Fisher was the only girls to clear the bar at 5′ 6″, which Durbin did on her first attempt. She cleared 5′ 7″ on her second attempt, while Fisher missed all three tries at that height. Durbin attempted 5′ 8-1/4″, which would have been a new personal best, but missed all three attempts.
Tying for fourth place in the girls’ high jump was Morgan Johnk of Panorama. She cleared 5′ 4″ before bowing out.
Two AC/GC athletes both placed sixteenth in their individual events. Junior Mady McDermott threw the shot 37′ 4-1/4″, and sophomore Kate Crawford ran the 3,000 meters in 10:45.48.
