Don’t forget: this Saturday is the inaugural Dallas County Historical Bike Ride, which will take riders on a trip from Waukee to Redfield and through the history books.

Waukee Area Historical Society President Sue Ellen Kennedy says participants will stay in a group, and will learn interesting facts from Iowa Historian Rod Stanley and others about the various locales they pass through. “Our main reason for this is to spread history, and educate individuals about the history of our area. And this is a great opportunity for them to get out and go to these areas to hear about the history. We wanted to do something new and original that would peak some interest of a group of people that really we haven’t been able to hit in the past. And that’s why we started this event.”

Kennedy is hopeful the inaugural event will see enough success that they can bring it back next year, taking it on a different route through the county. The event will begin with registration at 8 a.m. Saturday at Mickey’s Irish Pub in Waukee, with the ride beginning at 9. Cost to participate is $35 if you register ahead of time, or $45 on the day of the event, and there will also be an optional poker run for $20. All proceeds will benefit the Waukee Area Historical Society. Each attendee will receive a slap koozie, a year-long Raccoon River Valley Trail pass, an RRVT map, and a historic stop keepsake booklet. Participants will also be entered to win raffle prizes.
