Toddler Fest 2018 5

Over a thousand people showed up Saturday morning to take part in the fourth annual Dallas County Toddler Fest.

The event was cosponsored by the Dallas County Library Association and 4RKids, and they counted roughly 1,124 kids and parents who attended. Perry Library Director Mary Murphy says that was around what they had at last year’s event, but she felt they were better prepared this year. Last year they actually ran out of free books, so many didn’t get one. This year they erased any doubt, and wound up with about 400 extra. In addition to the free books, attendees were treated to cookies, face painting, a petting zoo, balloon creations, and photo opportunities with some princesses and superheroes.

Murphy said all 12 Dallas County public libraries had booths to promote their individual summer reading programs, and there was an assortment of vendors who offer services to families with young children. She was very pleased with how everything went, and believes attendees had a great time. “It was awesome turnout, awesome vendors. You couldn’t ask for a more friendlier function for little kids. I was handing out bags to parents, and I said, ‘Here, you need a bag for each one of your children, because you will receive a lot of free things at the Toddler Fest!’ It was just a good time for little kids!”

Looking ahead to next year, Murphy thinks one change could be to have it run longer. She also says they will have two lines for books to keep things moving quicker, and they’ll also supply bottles of water for kids.
