Greene County dropped from Class 3A to 2A in track & field from last season to this one, and the Rams travel to Manson today for State qualifying starting at 4 p.m. In 2A, there are 12 teams at each of eight different sites. First and second place finishers in each event become State qualifiers, as do the next eight best performances statewide.
Joining Greene County and the host teams from Manson-Northwest Webster for the coed event are Alta-Aurelia, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, Eagle Grove, Emmetsburg, Ogden, Pocahontas Area, Roland-Story (Story City), South Central Calhoun (Lake City), South Hamilton (Jewell), and Southeast Valley (Gowrie).
Greene County is led by two-time Drake Relays champion and State Champion high jumper Megan Durbin. The senior is the overall state leader in that event at 5′ 8″. She’s also a state contender in the 200 meters and on sprint relays. The Rams will be without a top field event performer because of an injury. Junior Janelle Brophy, a long jump State qualifier in 2017, had knee surgery yesterday and her season is over.
On the boys’ side, the Rams have been led by sophomores Colby Kafer and Carter Morton. Head coach Chad Morton has his son scheduled for the high jump, 110 meter high hurdles, 400 meter low hurdles, and the 4 x 100 meter relay. Kafer is scheduled to long jump, run the 200 meter dash, the 4 x 200 meter relay, and the 4 x 100 meter relay.
The four-class Coed State Meet is May 17-18-19 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
