The first year of Greene County High School boys’ soccer has seen the Rams compile a 9-7 record with just one regular season match to play before opening the Class 1A postseason. The Iowa High School Athletic Association has assigned the Rams to Substate 1 and a 5 p.m. match on Monday, May 21 vs. Unity Christian (Orange City) in Denison to begin postseason play. The winner is scheduled to play either Kuemper Catholic (Carroll) or Western Christian (Hull) on May 23 at 6 p.m. in Orange City at MOC-Floyd Valley High School. The other teams in Substate 1 are Sioux Center, MOC-Floyd Valley, West Sioux (Hawarden), and eighth ranked Gilbert.
Coach Carl Behne’s Rams will be meeting a Knights’ team that takes a 2-8 record into the final week of the regular season. Unity Christian averages just one goal per match while allowing an average of 3.7 goals per contest. Greene County averages scoring 3.8 goals while give up an average of 2.8 goals.
Brazilian foreign exchange student Leo Marques leads the Rams in goal scoring with 31 in the 15 matches he’s played. The total number of goals ranks second in all of Iowa high school soccer.
