The John Hupp era of Greene County baseball started with a 2-1 victory in Perry on Thursday night. Senior Ben Wilkens threw a complete game two-hitter. Senior Wade Adcock tied the game 1-1 with a home run to centerfield, his first career long-tripper. The sixth inning long ball evened the score at 1-1 after Perry took a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Adcock walked with two outs and no one on base in the top of the seventh, then scored on a double to right center from junior Bryce Hoyle on a ball that short-hopped the fence. In a game that was dominated by pitching, there were just seven total hits, five of those by the Rams.
Wilkins walked four and struck out nine Blue Jays. Both hits allowed were in the fourth inning when the Blue Jays scored. The Greene County right hander retired the last six batters he faced and when the game ended he was very near the maximum of 110 pitches allowed by an individual in a single day. The Perry run was not earned.
Greene County opens Heart of Iowa Activities Conference play tonight on the road in Des Moines at Saydel High School.
