acgcThe ACGC baseball team made the trek eastward to Granger last night for a West Central Activities Conference matchup with the Woodward-Granger Hawks. While they held a lead for the first time this season, their offensive productivity wasn’t enough to match their opponents, as the Hawks flew past the Chargers late to win 13-3 in six innings.

Charger senior Caden Wardyn scored off a Quenton Spack double in the top of the first to give ACGC the early 1-0 lead. The Hawks responded in the bottom half when sophomore Bryce Achenbach came home off an RBI single from senior Joe Rhodes. Both teams exchanged two runs each in the bottom of the 2nd and top of the 3rd, tying the game at 3 heading into the fourth.

The game unraveled for the Chargers in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded, W-G senior Cole Theisen bombed a triple towards the wall, bringing home three runners and coming home himself on the next at-bat. The Hawks never looked back as they brought six more runs across the plate to seal the win in the home half of the sixth.

The tag team effort of senior Matt Buch and sophomore Jay Dorenkamp combined for 13 strikeouts and just three walks for the Hawks. Every batter in the starting lineup, in addition to sophomore Pacey Moats, scored for the Hawks and the team also registered seven stolen bases. The Chargers fall to 0-3 on the season, while the Hawks improve to 2-1. ACGC will have the Memorial Day weekend off before returning home to battle the Knights of Woodward Academy on Tuesday.

On the other side of the district, the ACGC softball team has won three in a row for just the second time in program history, defeating the Hawks 12-7 in Woodward and improving to 3-0 on the season.
