The U.S. Census Bureau recently released population estimates as of July of 2017 and Guthrie and Adair counties both have estimated population declines.
In Guthrie County, the overall decline between 2010 and 2017 was 2.6%, with an official estimate of 10,670. In the past seven years, every established population center in the county has declined in population except the Guthrie portion of Stuart, which has increased by an estimated 3%. The largest city is still Guthrie Center, with an estimated population of 1,503, while the smallest is Jamaica with 217.
In Adair County, the overall decline in the same period was 8.2%, with an official estimate of 7,054. The largest population center in Adair County remains Greenfield, though their population has declined by approximately 8.6%, with an estimated population of 1,809. Both counties were in the large majority that saw a decline in the state in the previous year. Only 27 of Iowa’s 99 counties saw a population growth from 2016-2017.
