DSCN8663A gas leak on Wednesday forced a temporary closure to a portion of the downtown square in Jefferson.

Police Chief Mark Clouse told Raccoon Valley Radio that the 100 block of East Lincoln Way was blocked off due to a possible gas leak. All area businesses were temporarily closed and all occupants were evacuated as a precaution. Alliant Energy crews were called in to find the leak.  Alliant Energy Spokesperson Justin Foss tells Raccoon Valley Radio that the leak was located inside one of the business owners in the area. Foss adds that Alliant crews shut off the gas to stop the leak and since the leak was found to be on the customer side of the pipe, it is up to the business owner to hire someone to fix the issue.

The Jefferson Police and Fire departments, as well as the Greene County Sheriff’s office assisted at the scene.
