A series of tornado warnings skipped around parts of our listening area Wednesday afternoon.
The National Weather Service issued three tornado warnings. The first one began at 2:20pm for northwestern Greene County. During that tornado warning, Greene County Emergency Management Coordinator Dennis Morlan activated the severe weather sirens for Scranton, Churdan and Jefferson, and he also deployed weather spotters for the western and northern portions of the county. Morlan noted that there was cloud rotation on radar around the Scranton area and that the rotation continued straight north to Churdan. Greene County Sheriff Jack Williams confirmed that a funnel cloud touched down between Scranton and Churdan twice, turning it into a very brief tornado, but then went back up into the sky.
The National Weather Service also issued two additional tornado warnings at 2:30pm for southwestern Greene and north central Dallas counties, as well as the final warning at 2:45pm for northern Greene County. Weather Eye Meteorologists as well as weather spotters confirmed a tornado north of Perry in the second warning and another tornado was confirmed north of Paton in the third warning.
Sheriff Williams said there are no reports of property damage at this time.
Five Raccoon Valley Radio staff members were in contact with Weather Eye Meteorologists, Greene County Emergency Management and the Greene County Sheriff’s office. The one to count on for severe weather coverage is the Raccoon Valley Radio Network.
