The free summer lunch program is currently underway for the Greene County School District.

Superintendent Tim Christensen says the program is going along well. Last Wednesday, for example, Christensen points out the district served 235 kids. There are two sites, one at the elementary school in Jefferson and the other at the Grand Junction Community Center. The School Board recently approved a rental agreement to utilize the community center for a total of $1,560. The District uses nutritional funds that they receive from a federal grant through the Summer Food Service Program. Christensen says a lot of work went into getting that site prepared after the Board retroactively approved the agreement last week.

“Did a lot of work with the Grand Junction City Council (and) really wanted to have a site in Grand Junction. They (the City Council) were very supportive of that. (We) Worked with the state to get the kitchen, in the community center over there, licensed (and) it went very well.”

Christensen notes that any youth from ages 1 to 18 are allowed to eat a free lunch Monday through Friday through August 3rd. Meals at the elementary school are served from 11:30am to 12:30pm and at Grand Junction from 11am to 12:30pm.

The district will also provide transportation from the other communities to the meal sites. Buses will pick up kids at the Scranton Community Center at 11:15am and drop them off at 12:20pm. Kids will also be picked up at 11:15am from the Rippey Library and dropped back off at 12:20pm. Kids in Dana will be picked up at 10:45am from Main Street and dropped off at 11:45am.
