Jefferson Matters: Main Street recently installed its fourth rooftop art in the downtown square.

Program Director Peg Raney says the latest rooftop art is called “Music Straight From the Heart” and is on top of the Jones Appliance building on the westside of the square. Raney points out that the art is inspired by Sheri Sloan, who co-owns the building. Sloan taught piano lessons and loves music. She contacted local artist Curt Nelson, who created the artwork, which also leaves some interpretation.

“It has a big, beautiful, red heart and then it has a treble clef on top. And then just lots of colors and notes floating outside of this art. You know, I haven’t really decided what all of the colors if it’s a music library. You’ll have to go take a look and decide for yourself.”

Rooftop art started back in 2015 with the first installation on top of Skeeter Creek Fabricators on the northside of the square. Since then, there’s been two other rooftop art projects, including: the former Homestead Bakery building and Prairie Blue Creative Arts Center. Raney encourages other building owners to do their own rooftop art. She adds that JMMS can help with design ideas as well.
