severe thunderstorm

A severe thunderstorm system crossed through Adair, Guthrie, and Dallas counties midday Thursday, causing extensive damage in some areas and prompting live coverage by the Raccoon Valley Radio Severe Weather Action Team.

At 11 a.m., a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for a large area that included Guthrie and Adair counties, bringing with it up to 70-mile-per-hour wind gusts, torrential rainfall, and pea-sized hail. The storm hit Adair County particularly hard, as Emergency Management Coordinator Bob Kempf reported extensive tree damage in nearly every city, and the City of Greenfield was left without power. Before the first warning expired, a second severe thunderstorm warning was issued at 11:51 a.m. for northeastern Adair, southern Dallas, and all of Madison County. There was extensive tree damage reported in Winterset related to the second storm system.

The first warning was allowed to expire at noon, and the second one expired at 12:30 p.m. Six members of the Raccoon Valley Radio Severe Weather Action team, as well as Weather Eye meteorologists, the Guthrie and Adair County Emergency Management Coordinator, and local listeners contributed to the live coverage.
