The process for filling the vacant seat on the Adel City Council is beginning to take shape, and could have resolution soon.
The Council has been at four members since Mike Haynes had to vacate his position after he moved out of Adel. Given the choice between filling the seat through special election or appointment, the Council chose the latter as it was the far less expensive option. The City is now accepting applications until July 3rd, from anyone interested in filling the vacancy. Candidates will have to submit a resume and fill out a questionnaire in order to be considered.
City Clerk Jackie Steele says if they have more than four applicants, the personnel committee will meet to narrow the choices down to two or three candidates. Those candidates will then be considered at the regular City Council meeting on July 10th, with an appointment possibly made that evening. However, that appointment could still be contested. City Attorney Kristine Stone says if any citizens disagree with the Council’s choice, they will have 14 days after the appointment to submit a petition of protest. If there’s enough support, the City will be forced to hold a special election to fill the vacancy.
Anyone with questions, or who would like to be considered for the open seat, can stop in or call City Hall at 515-993-4525.
