Fireworks standLast year the Iowa Legislature passed framework for legalized fireworks. With that in mind, here are some reminders for Greene County rural residents.

The Greene County Attorney’s office confirms to Raccoon Valley Radio that there is currently no county ordinance for fireworks. However, the County adheres to the new state law in which fireworks are allowed. One of those regulations includes allowing fireworks to be shot off from June 1st through July 8th. Assistant County Attorney Thomas Laehn says according to State Code 727.2, in the absence of local restrictions, the law allows private citizens to use or explode “consumer fireworks.” However, a citizen must obtain a permit to use or explode “display fireworks.” A list of allowable consumer fireworks can be found in Iowa Code 100.19.

If someone in the rural portions of Greene County decides to shoot off “consumer fireworks” and it falls within the regulated time frame by state law, then that individual does not have to apply for a permit. The County requests those individuals to notify the law enforcement center of where and when they will be shooting off fireworks. The non-emergency number is 386-2136.
