The weather was hot and humid for make up Heart of Iowa Activities Conference baseball Saturday morning in Jefferson when Greene County hosted PCM (Monroe). The bats were not hot, at least, not early, as PCM took advantage of two early errors, three wild pitches, and a passed ball, to take an early 3-0 lead. The Mustangs are the last place team in the HOIAC and the Rams were riding a hot streak, but it wasn’t until a four run fourth that Greene County collected its first hit and took its first lead. The Rams led 5-3 after the fourth, and went on to win, 6-4, to improve to 7-5 in the conference and 14-8 overall. The Mustangs fell to 2-11 and 9-12.
Greene County had six hits, all singles, and only three of the six left the infield. The Mustangs collected five hits off starting and wining pitcher Bryce Hoyle. The junior fanned five and walked two while going the first six innings and improving his pitching record to 4-1. The left-hander gave just two earned runs.
Sophomore Brent Riley picked up a three out save, facing the minimum three batters. Riley also collected a save on Friday night in the 3-2 win over South Hamilton in Jewell. He retired all nine batters he faced in the two appearances over about a 15 hour period.
Wade Adcock, Ben Wilkins, and Jordan Patterson had runs batted in for the Rams, who have won nine of their last 10 games and clinched a second straight winning season.
