Fireworks 3

Tomorrow is the Fourth of July, and for Perry residents that means the use of fireworks will be allowed between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m.

However, Fire Chief Chris Hinds reminds people that fireworks can be dangerous, especially when in inexperienced hands. “Age and supervision is always paramount. You need to have people old enough to be responsible, in order to handle fireworks of any type. And you need to have people that are responsible enough that if they see somebody doing something that they shouldn’t, that they step forward and say, ‘Hey, let’s back up here, and be a little safer (with) what we’re doing.’”

Hinds says some of the incidents typically seen with fireworks are when they go off unexpectedly in someone’s hands or near their face, which can cause permanent disfigurement, especially when it involves a child. Also, he warns of handheld fireworks known as snappers that can appear to be candy, which can do a lot of harm to a child if they bite down on one. Finally, Hinds emphasizes you should never aim fireworks at someone else, including things like bottle rockets and Roman candles.
