At the most recent meeting of the Adel City Council, they were presented with a proposal they don’t have a long history with: a resident had submitted a request to purchase a City-owned right-of-way just east of 412 Prairie Street.

City Attorney Kristine Stone said this isn’t that uncommon of an occurrence, but recommended that the City adopt a policy on how right-of-way purchase requests will be handled in the long term before approving the imminent sale. After some discussion, the Council decided it would be best to accept bids for the right-of-way, just in case someone else had an interest in purchasing it. City Administrator Anthony Brown said there likely won’t be much competition for this particular piece of land, but felt it was a reasonable policy to adopt for future cases.

As to the matter of the right-of-way purchase on Prairie Street, the City will accept bids until August 7th, a week before the regular Council meeting. They will open and consider any bids at the public hearing. Anyone with questions is encouraged to reach out to Adel City Hall at 515-993-4525.
