iowa-state-patrolA head-on collision killed one man from South Dakota and possibly injured a Rippey man in Woodbury County Wednesday afternoon.

According to a report from the Iowa State Patrol, the crash happened just before 2pm east of Correctionville on Highway 20. A 2015 Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by 58-year-old Robert Ray Brewer of Utica, South Dakota was traveling east on the highway when, for an unknown reason, he crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a westbound 2011 Peterbilt semi-tractor trailer driven by 29-year-old Matthew William McNeill of Rippey. Brewer was pronounced dead at the scene and McNeill complained of possible injuries and was taken to Mercy Medical Center by a Correctionville Ambulance. The extent of McNeill’s injuries are unknown at this time.

According to the crash report, both drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the wreck, airbags deployed in both vehicles, and both vehicles were totaled. The semi-tractor trailer is owned by McNeill Trucking LLC. The semi was carrying hazardous materials, and none of the hazardous materials were spilled, so no Hazmat was needed at the scene.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Iowa Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Enforcement, Iowa Department of Transportation Maintenance, Woodbury County Sheriff’s office, Correctionville Fire Department, Correctionville Ambulance, Woodbury Emergency Services, Sioux City Fire Department, Siouxland Paramedics, and the Yankton, South Dakota County Sheriff’s office assisted the Iowa State Patrol at the scene.
