This year the Greene County Community Center is turning 20-years-old and before a celebration anniversary happens in November, one of the original parts of the facility will get a facelift.

Starting today the 20-year-old gym floor is being replaced. Sport Construction Midwest from Adel is removing and installing the new gym floor. Jefferson Parks and Recreation Director Vicky Lautner says the project costs $60,900. Part of the expense is being paid with a $45,900 grant from Grow Greene County Gaming Corporation, while the remaining $15,000 is coming from the City of Jefferson’s hotel/motel tax and People Active in County Exercise (PACE) funds.

Parks and Rec Board President Mary Pedersen talks about her excitement for the project.

“We’re so excited that we were granted the money from Grow Greene County to be able to get a new floor. I’m here at the rec center a lot with my kids and family stuff and it’s definitely been used a lot. We’re ready for a new one and it’ll be nice. We’re getting the Sport Court which is the same thing that we have right now. It’s held up great the last 20 years and we’re hoping (the new one) lasts 20 (years) more.”

While the new floor is being installed, Lautner notes that the gym will be closed from August 1st through August 8th.
