Sweet Corn 2018

The signature event for the City of Adel every year is the Sweet Corn Festival, and it will be here very soon.

The 39th annual festival is hosted by the Adel Partners Chamber of Commerce, and runs Friday, August 10th, and Saturday, August 11th. Festivities begin Friday with the Shucking of the Corn and the crowning of the Sweet Corn Princess. Saturday is when the bulk of activities will happen, starting at 8 a.m. with the 5K fun run. The Sweet Corn Parade, will begin at 9:30, travelling along Main Street from 18th to 11th Street. Of course, the big draw of the festival is the free sweet corn, which will be served starting at 11 a.m. until it runs out.

Other activities throughout the day include: a car show; food, craft, art, and information vendors around the square; free games for kids; and music by Ctrl C and the Chautauqua Road Band at the Stage and Pavilion. Additionally, there will be a beer garden in the evening, featuring a beer made specially for the Sweet Corn Festival. Festival Committee member Macinzie McFarland encourages people to attend for a variety of reasons. “Obviously the sweet corn is huge. It’s probably some of the best sweet corn I’ve ever had, and I grew up in Iowa, so that’s saying something! And just the band at night, with the new craft brew, I think that’s a great addition to the event.”

Adel Chamber President Marc Riley echoes McFarland’s take on the beer, as he says there may never again be an opportunity for people to try it. Riley adds, the festival is something everyone should experience at least once. “If you’ve never been to Sweet Corn (Festival), come this year. We had wonderful weather last year, it was in the 70’s, it could be in the hundreds this year, you never know. But you don’t want to miss out, because it’s an experience unlike any other!”

The Raccoon Valley Radio Big Red Radio will be at both days of the Adel Sweet Corn Festival, to broadcast live, play music, and provide public address services. To learn more, listen to today’s Perry Fareway Let’s Talk Dallas County program on air and at RaccoonValleyRadio.com.
