A structure that was once being considered for demolition but was saved 21 years ago continues to thrive and give Greene County youth a safe place to have fun.
The Webb House in Jefferson may seem like an ordinary house that across the street from the First United Methodist Church, but for Co-organizer Jim North, it’s a place where middle school kids can go and have fun in a safe and positive environment.
“We opened up in December and we had 50 kids in just the basement of the old Webb House. It’s named Webb because Catherine Webb lived there for several years and we just named it after her. Nothing was located there except for a bunch of couches and it was a big success.”
Going on 21 years later, North says they are now up to 100 kids and feature 7 pinball machines, three pool tables, five televisions with gaming consoles, three computers with games, laser tag, along with some outdoor games as well all for free. Plus, there are food and drinks available for purchase at affordable prices. North points out that it costs about $500 per month for rent and they only survive on donations and will gladly accept any kind of donations throughout the year.
“There are lots of people that help with this, it’s not just one person. It has to be a lot of other adults and a committee that runs it, and the youth, they are the main ones. We’re thankful to Greene County for all of the support over the years.”
The Webb House is open Fridays from 7 to 9pm for 6 to 8 graders and will be open Wednesday afternoons from 1:45 to 5pm for 5 through 8 grades starting August 29th. To hear more from North about the Webb House, listen to today’s Community State Bank in Paton Let’s Talk Greene County program.
