At some high schools in Iowa, it’s fairly common to see football student-athletes start at both an offensive and defensive position. At Adel-Desoto-Minburn Community Schools under new head football coach Garrison Carter, they’re having a majority of their student-athletes focus on one spot. The Raccoon Valley Radio Network sat down with Carter after Wednesday’s practice to talk about this year’s Tiger varsity football team and the personnel he has out. Carter mentioned he and the coaching staff have been intentional in limiting the number of athletes having to play both offense and defense. “We have a ton of good football players, and I think we can make them great football players at one thing,” Carter said, “If you’re asking a kid to only play safety, your asking a kid to only play wide receiver, instead of trying to be 75% effort playing both (positions).”

Carter adds trying to have athletes focus on one position on the field has also allowed the team to grow together during preseason camp. “When we break up and go first-team offense, most of the time we’re playing against eight or nine guys from our first team defense,” Carter said, “We’ve been almost able to double our reps. Our kids are getting really good at our (plays).”
