The 2018 Iowa State Fair is now officially in the books, and there were several award-winning entries submitted this year by Dallas County residents.
In the Beaverdale Confections Chocolate and Candy Sculpture competition, which was judged last Tuesday, Virginia Sheeder of Linden was awarded first place and a $50 cash prize in the youth class. The challenge was to recreate State Fair landmarks out of chocolate, with entries judged on artistic flair, fair theme, visual display, and ingredients. Also last week, Allison Baumhover of Woodward took first place and a $35 cash prize in the “Everything’s Coming Up Rose Water” competition, where participants were challenged to create a baked item typical of colonial times, using rose water as an ingredient. Entries were judged on flavor, appearance, and story.
Elsewhere at the Fair, the Dallas County 4-H team made up of Adel residents Katie Jimmerson, Spencer Collins, Brodrick Schmidt, and Jarrett Orman placed third in the Youth Livestock Judging competition in the team division. Additionally, Orman placed 6th and Jimmerson 9th in the individual competition. Other winners from Dallas County throughout the Fair, as previously reported, include: Adel-DeSoto-Minburn student Dylan Barker, was awarded Market Best of Show in the FFA Rabbit Show, as well as champion in meat pen, meat rabbit, and fryer, and reserve champion in roaster pen and roaster; Kathy Lewis of Adel, who placed first in professional floral design, professional box, Christmas decoration or other holiday, egg, tray, and vase, pitcher, or bowl in the China and porcelain painting competitions; Joey Shaw of Perry, who won first in the doll garment class of the crochet contest; Martha Klatt of Adel, who received first in the combination — Appliqué Small Quilt in the quilting contest; and Connie D. Cooper of Adel, who placed first for plate – animal or birds in China, lace tablecloth in dry goods, and open salts in small glass item collections, each in the Heritage Contest.
