The Perry Police Department is warning motorists that while it’s never a good idea to do so, today is not the day to text while driving.

That’s because from noon until 3 p.m. today, they will be conducting a traffic safety project focused on distracted driving. Officers will be posted at different locations throughout the City, looking specifically for drivers who are texting. Violators will be stopped and cited, which will result in a $30 fine, which balloons to more than $100 after court costs and surcharges. The funding for the project is being provided by the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau, and the Perry Police say they chose today as the date because of its proximity to the start of the school year.
