acgcToday is the first day of school for area students and that includes athletes. The ACGC volleyball and cross country teams will both be in action tonight.

The volleyball squad already got their season off to a good start Tuesday with a win over Guthrie County and West Central Activities Conference rival West Central Valley. The Chargers swept the Wildcats for the second straight year and will look to stay undefeated in their home opener tonight against Van Meter.

Unlike West Central Valley, the Chargers have come up short in both previous meetings against the Bulldogs. The Chargers were blanked last season, falling at Van Meter 3-0. The Bulldogs served up a balanced attack in that game, with three different players notching three kills each. The Bulldogs have an experienced team with eight seniors and two juniors on the varsity roster.

The ACGC cross country teams will get their season started at the Iowa State Cross Country Course in Ames for an invitational featuring several central Iowa schools, including Class 2A bound Panorama and Greene County. Both the boys and the girls teams enter the meet ranked in the top 15 in Class 1A. Individually, Kate Crawford is ranked 2nd on the girls side and Noah Nelsen comes in at number seven for the boys.

The cross country meet begins at 4:45pm and first serve for the volleyball home opener is set for 7pm from Guthrie Center.
