Greene County defeated Nevada 38-10 on Friday night at Linduska Field in non-district high school football. In doing so, the Rams improved to 2-0 on the season. A modest start, but the two victories equal the total number of wins the Greene County football program had in 2016 and ’17 combined. The Rams played in Class 3A District 2 those two seasons, and not only was that district loaded with outstanding teams, so was the non-district schedule, making for one of Iowa’s most difficult 3A schedules.

The Rams moved down a class this season to 2A, and although District play doesn’t start until Sept. 21, the overall schedule isn’t loaded with one powerhouse after another. Greene County began the season with a 14-6 win at Perry (0-2) before defeating Nevada (0-2). This Friday, the Rams play on the northeast side of Des Moines at Saydel (0-2). The Eagles lost to Atlantic 45-6, and to Knoxville by a 19-13 score.

Quarterback Brent Riley threw for 231 yards, three touchdown passes and no interceptions vs. the Cubs. Carter Morton, Lance Hughes, and Colby Kafer had the TD receptions. Kafer and Clint Dennhardt each had a rushing touchdown, and kicker Cael Fisher booted a 22 yard field goal and was five for five on extra points.

Greene County held Nevada to 40 rushing yards on 32 attempts and the Cubs had 16 plays from scrimmage, not counting incomplete passes, that either lost yardage or went for no gain. Most of Nevada’s 227 yards were through the air. The Rams have held their first two opponents scoreless in six of the eight quarters played this season.
