logo-Iowa-DNRA number of small game hunting seasons are now open in Iowa.

Greene County Conservation Director Dan Towers says squirrel, rabbit, dove and teal duck seasons all opened September 1st. He reminds hunters to make sure you have a valid hunting license for the year. “Before you get out there in the field and the game warden checks you, make sure you have your hunting license. It also requires a habitat stamp. If you’re a waterfowl hunter you need a state and federal duck stamps. Those are all available in the (County) Recorder’s office.”

Towers talks about how the small game hunting numbers have steadily decreased over the years.

“Part of the problem is, there just isn’t the recruitment of young hunters into this sport anymore. Nationwide, hunter numbers have declined in every state. There’s more activities out there for kids to be involved with and just less interest. It’s fun and it’s a good time of year, and it’s a good thing to take a youth out and get them involved.”
