While the summer severe storm season isn’t quite over yet, some emergency personnel are optimistic that activity wasn’t as intense this year. Adair and Guthrie County Emergency Management Agency Coordinator Bob Kempf says the amount of tornadoes and flooding in the region were below average.
Kempf talks about the after effects of the summer’s most significant storm in late June, which affected mainly Adair County. “Adair County was named in the Presidential declaration for assistance to the public entities, which are our cities, our schools, our utility infrastructures and things like that, (and) the hospital. We did not have enough uninsured damages to look at the individual assistance program that would have helped the general, uninsured public out. We did not qualify for that.”
Kempf also says the State of Iowa as a whole also did not qualify for any national relief funds as a result of the summer severe storm season. All summer long Raccoon Valley Radio’s Severe Weather Action Team provided life coverage whenever the National Weather Service issued a Severe Weather Warning for Guthrie, Dallas, and Greene counties. We worked with local officials to provide updates on road closures, storm conditions and any cancellations or delays. The one to count on for severe weather coverage is Raccoon Valley Radio.
