Recently, a very large piece of the newly renovated Dewey Field entryway was installed, and now Perry fans can experience what’s likely the largest blue jay they’re likely to see.

The 800-pound sculpture created by artist John Brommel was placed in its permanent spot along Blue Jay Way last Friday. Walton Tree Service helped with the installation of the artwork, which was commissioned and donated by the VanKirk family. Brommel came out of retirement to design and create the sculpture, which took four months to complete. The sculpture was mostly ready before the opening football game of the season, but Brommel decided he didn’t like the way the head looked and completely remade it in a short period of time.

Superintendent Clark Wicks was very pleased with the finished product and believes it will be a lasting symbol of Blue Jay pride for generations to come. He also reminds people they can still donate to the Dewey Field renovation project, and get their names on a brick or the donor wall.
