The Greene County Board of Supervisors met Monday in regular session.
During open forum, Supervisor Mick Burkett said he met with local veteran Jerry Spaulding about selecting a new County Veterans Affairs Commissioner. Spaulding mentioned that some of the veterans wanted to be involved in the selection process and that the Board has a deadline for applications for the position slated for October 1st.
Also during open forum, Assistant County Attorney Thomas Laehn addressed the Board on a couple of items. He said when the courthouse security committee meets again, they will hear from the risk assessment report a recommendation to move the magistrate’s court from the first to the third floor of the courthouse. Laehn also told the Board that he would like to recommend reducing the assistant county attorney’s position from full to part time going forward, after the upcoming November general election. The Board took no action on either item. He also commended law enforcement on their efforts to execute search warrants and gather evidence to help stop drug pipelines in Greene County through the court system in the last couple of weeks. Finally, Laehn mentioned that Landus Cooperative’s attorney wanted to have another public hearing for a piece of property that they initially received from the county and agreed to pay for the publication of the notice for another hearing. The Board was okay with the decision to hold another hearing that is slated for September 24th.
Family members of a recently deceased individual involved in a fatal traffic crash between Jefferson and Scranton addressed the Board during open forum. Stan and Sandy Gibson, and Deb Mohr, asked the Board to install four-way stop signs at 240th Street and County Road P-14. Supervisor Chair John Muir said he hesitates to change traffic flow, but suggested to better educate the public and possibly increase signage of existing traffic signs that are already in place. County Engineer Wade Weiss said he would look into what the specific regulations were and would report back to the Board.
The Board then heard an update from Jefferson City Administrator Mike Palmer. He showed the Board the City’s new wayfinding signage that will be installed soon by city crews. He also gave updates on the three city-owned downtown buildings, applying for a third grant for the east entryway project and working with the Greene County School District on various items for the new school project south of Highway 30.
The Board then approved the County Recorder’s report of fees for August of $13,193.
Finally, the Board heard an update from Weiss on the MidAmerican Energy wind turbine project. He said he has reached an agreement with the utility company on the amount of damages that were caused to the county roads from the two phases of wind turbine projects. He estimated over $1 million in damages that will need to be repaired. He said the worst areas will be addressed before this winter.
