The 3-0 start to the 2018 Greene County High School football season has caught the attention of at least some of the media members who vote for top 10 teams in the various classes of high school football in the state. The Des Moines Sunday Register in its Sept. 9 ratings and the Cedar Rapids Gazette in its rankings of Sept. 10 both have Coach Mitch Moore’s team in the tenth spot. It’s believed to be the first time a Greene County team has been in a top 10, and the first since 2007 for the Rams, when they played as Jefferson-Scranton/Paton-Churdan.
Last week, the Rams were 68-0 winners in Des Moines over the Saydel Eagles. Prior to that, Greene County won its only home game of the season by topping Nevada, 38-10, and the season opener was a 14-6 win at Perry in the annual Battle for the Cowbell. Those three teams have a combined 1-8 record with the only victory coming from Nevada as they beat Perry last Friday.
Up next for the Rams is a 1-2 Gilbert team, a small Class 3A squad. The Tigers have lost to 3A teams Webster City and Boone, both on the road, and they have a victory over 2A Roland-Story (Story City) in their only home game to date.
Friday’s game at Gilbert can be heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Coverage starts at 6:30 p.m. with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
