Only six miles separate the cities of Perry and Minburn along the Raccoon River Valley Trail, and this Sunday there will be an event that will link them with both bikes and books.

The Friends of the Perry and Minburn Public Libraries are joining forces to offer the first ever “Ride to Read” event. Perry Friends member Lois Hoger says it’s geared for families with kids in elementary school, and will feature a few stops along the way. First, around one-mile into the ride from either City, there will be storytellers set up along the side of the trail. They will be telling stories that are each around five-minutes long, and Hoger says they’re sure to be very entertaining.

Two miles after that, at the halfway point between the two cities, local author Rebecca Janni will be set up, along with copies of her book, “Spin.” Janni will offer to sign the books for any that make it to her, and Hoger says many of those book will be complimentary. “We have an anonymous donor that has donated 100 of her books, so I’m so excited that we’re going to have them. At the registration booth, we will have a free book for the first 100 children that arrive. And we are so excited about this, so please come out, share the good story about ‘Ride to Read.’ And perhaps this will be a yearly event!”

There is no cost to attend, refreshments will be available at the central location, and registration can be done the day of the event. Registration will be at Forest Park Museum in Perry, as well as at the tennis courts in Minburn. “Ride to Read” will run from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, and people can participate at any point during that time frame.
