Hispanics United for Perry

Don’t forget, this Sunday there will be a pair of events hosted at Perry High School, with the rescheduled ¡Viva Perry! Latino Festival and the next program in the Hometown Heritage “Becoming American” series.

The Latino Festival was originally scheduled for August 25th, but will now be held Sunday from noon-6 p.m. in the parking lot west of the Performing Arts Center. Hispanics United for Perry (HUP) postponed the event in the wake of Mollie Tibbetts’ death, out of respect for the University of Iowa student. The rescheduled event will be a pared down version of the original, but will still include: food and other vendors; a performance by Perry’s folkloric dance troupe, Los Laureles; the Reina de la Festival, or Queen of the Festival competition; and the annual award for community support. All proceeds from the event will go to HUP for their yearly scholarships to graduating Perry High School seniors.

In the midst of the Latino Festival, attendees will be welcomed inside the school for a screening of the documentary “Welcome to Shelbyville,” presented by Hometown Heritage. The event will run from 2-4 p.m., and is part of their “Becoming American” film series, and the documentary will be shown in English with Spanish subtitles. Once the film is over, attendees will gather for a discussion moderated by Jon Wolseth with ISU Extension, who is also a member of HUP. A translator will be on hand to help facilitate the discussion.

There is no cost to attend the Latino Festival or the “Becoming American” program, though donations will be accepted.
