There are two regular season games left for Iowa high school football teams. Through week 7 the Greene County Rams sit in the number 12 spot in Class 2A RPI (Ratings Percentage Index). The teams that win their district or tie for the district title are automatic playoff qualifiers, while the RPI is used to determine at-large playoff qualifiers that do not win their district to fill out the field of 16.
Coach Mitch Moore’s Rams have virtually no chance of winning 2A District 9, but if they win at Red Oak this week and then at home on Oct. 19, the odds favor them getting to the postseason. Greene County has an RPI of .5886 and the Rams look good in two of the three categories used to figure the RPI.
The Greene County winning percentage is .8571 because they’ve won six of the seven games they’ve played. Only two teams in 2A are 7-0 and just seven others share 6-1 records with the Rams. Greene County has the worst opponents’ record of the 54 programs in their class at 22-41, but they are helped by having the second best opponents opponents’ record at 309-258.
The Rams are on the road at Red Oak on Friday night. The Tigers are 4-3 overall and both teams are 2-1 in Class 2A District 9. Friday’s game can be heard on KG98 and streamed on www.raccoonvalleyradio.com. Coverage begins at 6 p.m. with coverage at 7 p.m.
