The organizers of Perry’s Walking School Bus are hoping for good weather tomorrow, so they can hold a special edition of the program to celebrate National Walk to School Day.

Normally the Walking School Bus only operates on Fridays, but Coordinator Misty VonBehren says they’re making a special exception for the holiday. Weather permitting, volunteers and students will meet in the parking lot west of the Perry High School Performing Arts Center at 7:30 a.m., and they will then make their way along the safe routes to Perry Elementary. VonBehren says she’s hopeful they’ll have some notable volunteers for the event, and people will just have to show up to find out who they are.

She adds, the Walking School Bus is a great way to get kids to exercise and help them be more attentive in school, while also teaching them about proper safety when walking. “This is a great opportunity for kids to get out, and also learn safe ways to walk within school. I mean, we talk about stopping and looking both ways, and making sure that we stay on the sidewalk and stay away from the streets, and all that kind of thing.”

VonBehren is hopeful the weather cooperates and they’re able to properly celebrate National Walk to School Day. However, if they have to cancel the event, she promises to let Raccoon Valley Radio know so we can help spread the word.
