The Democratic candidate for Iowa Secretary of State stopped in Jefferson Thursday.
Deidre DeJear attended a meet and greet event for voters just days before the midterm elections. The biggest change she wants to see in the Secretary of State’s office is improving voter turnout in all elections. She tells Raccoon Valley Radio the way she wants to improve voter turnout percentages is by installing an automatic voter registration system. Through that system, DeJear says she wants to communicate with eligible voters and get them motivated to participate in all elections.
DeJear adds that instead of having several entities doing their own separate thing to encourage people to vote, she believes it’s the responsibility of the office of the Secretary of State to help pull all entities together for that common goal.
“What I would like to do is bring alongside these auditors (and) these organizations so that we can consolidate our resources and figure out best practices that we can use to get out the vote.”
Another area that DeJear wants to address if elected as Secretary of State is improving business registrations. She says she wants to connect small businesses with resources from local, state and federal levels to help them thrive and aide them through tough economic times.
DeJear is challenging Republican incumbent candidate Paul Pate. Election Day is November 6th.
