The 2018 Greene County High School football season saw the Rams win the most games in a season since 2007. That team and this one both went 8-2 and made the playoffs in Class 2A. Another similarity between the two teams 11 years apart is that both had just one regular season loss, and it was to Kuemper Catholic (Carroll). Both teams lost road games in the opening round of the playoffs, the 2018 Rams to Benton Community (Van Horne) and the team of 11 years ago to Hampton-Dumont.
Bill Kibby was the head coach of the Jefferson-Scranton/Paton-Churdan Rams team back then and Mitch Moore is the current coach of the Rams. Coach Moore’s second Greene County team distinguished itself from the ’07 squad by winning seven more games than the previous season. Going from 1-8 to 8-1 in back-to-back seasons is a rare feat. The 2006 Rams were 11-1 and went unbeaten in the regular season, which was followed up by the 8-1 regular season and 8-2 overall record of ’07.
Even though the two barely know each other and are decades apart in age, there are other similarities between head coaches. Both played small college football; Kibby for Central College in Pella, and Moore at Wisconsin-Whitewater. Both grew up in small Iowa towns; Kibby is from Lohrville and Moore is from Kelly. The coaching styles aren’t identical, but the two men share the ability to get the best from their players.
