While the final conceptual plans for the Greene County School District’s $35.48 million project are still being worked on, preliminary floor plans were recently reviewed by the School Board.

The high school will consist of two stories. Board member Dr. Steve Karber says the second story will be mainly classrooms and smaller spaces for small groups and individualized learning opportunities. As for the performing arts center, band and choir classes will take place in classrooms connected to the auditorium. There will also be high-tech and energy efficient lighting in the auditorium as well.

The gym will be big enough to include three full-sized wrestling mats. There will also be an automatic divider to separate the gym for different activities, and there are bleachers on both sidelines. There will be two boys and two girls locker rooms as well.

The cafeteria will be connected to the performing arts center and the career academy. One concern that the Greene County Board of Supervisors brought up last week was whether or not the school district kitchen was going to be included in the career academy building. Superintendent Tim Christensen addresses that issue.

“It makes sense to have the career academy attached to the building. There will be a secured entrance and everything so that’s not an issue. But just in terms of the design and everything (and) the layout, it makes sense to have the district kitchen serving district students to be in the edge of the career academy.”

Karber notes that they are planning on subtracting the amount and square-footage for the kitchen from the $5 million portion of the career academy that the Supervisors are providing.

Christensen adds that the final plans will be made by the December school board meeting.
