It’s break time now for those on the Greene County High School wrestling team. First year head coach Zach Beekman’s Rams have gone through the first four weeks of the season with a 10-7 dual meet record, despite not having all the pieces for the 14 weight class lineup in place. Injuries, illness, and ineligibilities, have kept the Rams from being at full strength. The coach is hoping the pieces will come together, and soon, because once the Rams begin the 2019 portion of their schedule, they will be busy.
Starting with a quadrangular in Ogden on Jan. 3 and ending on Jan. 26 at the ACGC Charger Invitational in Guthrie Center, the Rams have eight competition dates on the regular season schedule in 23 days. They have a full week off scheduled from the end of the regular season before entering the postseason on Feb. 2 in Ida Grove for Class 2A Sectional competition. Coach Beekman intentionally started 2019 with back-to-back competitions in order to simulate the State Tournament schedule. After the quad on Jan. 3 in Ogden, the Rams go to Alleman on Jan. 4 for the North Polk tournament.
The Rams did not have a State Tournament qualifier in 2018, which was the first time since the 1988-89 season that happened. The district the Rams have been assigned to has 18 returning 2018 State Tournament qualifiers in it, so getting one or more Greene County wrestlers to Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines has its challenges.
