As we head into the peak of the influenza season, residents are reminded of ways to prevent the spread of illness.
According to the most recent report from the Iowa Influenza Surveillance Network the geographic spread of influenza is now local, and there have been 47 hospitalizations cumulative this season. Flu symptoms include: fever, aches, chills, fatigue, stuffy nose, and headache. Guthrie County Public Health Director Jotham Arber recommends an annual flu vaccine, and if you are sick with a flu-like illness to stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone, except to get medical care or for other necessities. Other recommended ways to prevent the spread of illness include covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, wash your hands often, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, and clean and disinfect surfaces and objects. As you may be sharing foods with others this holiday season, Arber encourages people to flip or rip, don’t double dip, snack foods.
