Winter break can be a hard time to keep kids engaged with learning, but reading to and with them an easy way to do that.

Greene County School District Reading Specialist Julie Neal says even though teachers have incentives for students to read throughout winter break, it’s still up to the parents to make sure that happens. “Obviously we want it to be, ‘Yeah we want to read and for enjoyment.’ So keep it in the back of your mind (to) keep those books handy, keep them placed around your house, keep them in the kitchen, keep them in the car, so that that can be always, ‘Hey you’ve got a few minutes, why don’t you go pull a book up and read it?’”

She points out another resource is the Jefferson Public Library as a way to promote reading to your child whenever you can, because it’s free to signup for a library card and check out items. Neal also thanks parents for their effort to read to kids.

“We appreciate all the help you give us at home with your child. The more support and the extra practice they get at home helps them do better at school. We appreciate everything they do at home.”

Greene County School District resumes classes on Monday, January 7th.
