Greene County’s wrestling program has a busy day today. The varsity is at Eldora for the South Hardin Tournament and the JV stays in Jefferson to host the annual Junior Varsity tournament in the middle school gym.
Coach Zach Beekman’s Rams have been hit with injury and illness this week and won’t be fielding a full squad in Eldora. The Rams were 1-1 in Heart of Iowa Activities Conference dual meets on Thursday night in Monroe, losing to Class 2A number one ranked PCM 69-12, but they started the night with a come from behind 42-39 victory over South Hamilton (Jewell).
The Rams trailed the Hawks 39-36 with only the 120 lbs. weight class left when sophomore Chance McCollom won by fall, which put his team in the win column. McCollom told Raccoon Valley Radio it was a relief when the official slapped the mat signifying he, and the Rams, had won. “It felt good. I was relieved that it was over. I was getty pretty tired out there.” He led 4-0, then surrendered the tying points on a headlock and near fall, before regaining the lead and securing the victory. He was asked what was going through his mind during that sequence. “Not to let this happen because the team was counting on me.”
Greene County is 14-8 in dual meets including 3-2 in the conference. The next dual meets for the Rams are Tuesday, Jan. 15 in the home finale in the middle school gym. It was also be Senior Night when the Rams host North Polk (Alleman) and Roland-Story (Story City) at 6 p.m.
