On the 150th anniversary of the day the City of Casey was incorporated, Casey residents gathered to celebrate the completion of a long-awaited project.
Casey officials and the members of the Casey Service Club brought out the giant scissors to cut the ribbon at the new Casey Community Building Saturday afternoon. The weekend’s snowstorm didn’t keep visitors from coming to check out the building and learn a bit of history about the railroad town. While dressed in turn-of-the century garb, service club member Judy Wedemeyer spoke about the origins of the town and its notable residents, and branch manager of the Casey Rolling Hills Bank, Corrine Palmer, presented a book of city council meeting minutes from 1907 to current Mayor Barry Chalfant.
Mayor Chalfant comments on the completed building, “It’s quite a bit larger than what we had before, it’s 50 by 50 in just the community building part. We’ve got a lot larger city clerk’s office and we’ve got a public works office that we didn’t really have before. It’s going to be a lot more efficient, as far as fuel efficient in electricity, we went to LED lighting and it’s a high efficiency furnace and air conditioners and stuff.”
The birthday celebration continued with a “Kick-Off Bash” fundraiser at the community building Saturday evening. Proceeds from the event will go toward the city’s sesquicentennial celebration scheduled for July 12-14th.
